Surfskate Noosa

A bold new website for Noosa’s most innovative surf coach.

The Brief

Surfskate Noosa was outgrowing their website. The business was scaling fast, the brand had evolved, and the website was no longer doing it justice. Founder Ryan Mayne needed an online home that reflected the calibre of his surf coaching, ranked well on Google despite being based outside central Noosa, and gave him the flexibility to grow into an online retail store down the track.

The goal was simple: create a website that captured Ryan’s unique approach, built trust at first glance, and helped more people find him online.

Our Client

Behind Surfskate Noosa is Ryan Mayne, a former firefighter and rescue technician turned high-performance surf coach. Based in the Noosa Hinterland, Ryan has built something genuinely different: a nervous system–first surf coaching method that combines land-based surfskate training in a purpose-built bowl with in-ocean coaching.

His clients range from kids learning to ride their first wave through to adults working through mental blocks and surfers progressing toward professional levels. With his iconic logo and a coaching philosophy rooted in safety, presence and repetition, Ryan has created a brand that locals and visitors genuinely love.

Our Approach

A brand-led custom web design

Ryan’s brand is full of personality, so the website needed to let that shine. As a Noosa web design company, we kept the layout clean and minimal, allowing the video and photography to bring the colour, character and energy of Surfskate Noosa to life. The result is a site that feels professional and high-performance, while still capturing the laid-back, kid-friendly warmth Ryan is known for.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) for an emerging business

Ranking well on Google was critical. Surfskate Noosa is based in Doonan rather than central Noosa, which puts the business at a slight disadvantage against more centrally located coaches. Our Noosa SEO services focused on closing that gap. We optimised each page individually around the keywords that matter, structured the content to match how people actually search, and built a foundation that supports long-term organic growth.

Fast website hosting

Visitors won’t wait around for a slow site, and neither will Google. We moved Surfskate Noosa onto our fast website hosting, optimising the server, code and assets so pages load quickly on every device. Faster load times mean better user experience, lower bounce rates and stronger SEO performance, all working together to turn visitors into bookings.

Video and imagery that build trust

People don’t book a surf coach based on words, they book based on how a coach makes them feel. We integrated video and still imagery throughout the site to help visitors get a real sense of Ryan, the bowl, and the experience of training with him. This approach captures attention, increases time on page, and helps prospective clients connect with the coaching style before they even pick up the phone.

AI-ready schema for the next era of search

Search is changing. More and more people are finding businesses through AI-powered tools like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and Perplexity. We implemented AI schema across the site to help these platforms understand and cite Surfskate Noosa accurately, giving Ryan visibility in the places his future clients are increasingly looking.

Built to grow with the business

Ryan’s vision doesn’t stop at surf coaching. With ecommerce on the roadmap, we built the new site on a flexible foundation that’s ready to support the next chapter, including selling Surfskate Noosa branded gear to the community he’s built. The site is designed to evolve as the business does, without needing to be rebuilt from scratch.

FAQs

Why is my website so slow, and what can I do about it?

Slow websites are usually caused by poor hosting, unoptimised images, bloated plugins or cheap shared servers. If your site takes more than 2–3 seconds to load, you’re losing visitors – and Google rankings. We host all Phancybox client websites on fast, optimised servers and handle the technical setup so load times aren’t something you have to think about. Surfskate Noosa saw exactly this benefit when we moved them onto our hosting infrastructure.

My business is based outside the main town centre - can I still rank on Google locally?

Yes, and this is a problem we solve regularly. Surfskate Noosa is based in Doonan, not central Noosa, which creates a real SEO challenge. Through careful on-page optimisation, structured content and local SEO strategy, we helped them rank competitively despite that location disadvantage. If your business isn’t in the CBD or main strip, that doesn’t mean you can’t be found – it just means your SEO needs to work harder.

What's the difference between a cheap website and a custom web design?

A cheap website gets you a template, generic copy and a builder platform that limits what you can do as you grow. A custom WordPress website is built around your business – your brand, your audience, your goals. It performs better in search, converts visitors better, and gives you a platform that can scale. For professional services businesses, the difference in how a site positions you is significant.

How do I get my business found on Google in Noosa or the Sunshine Coast?

Local SEO for Noosa and the Sunshine Coast comes down to a few things: keyword-optimised pages built around how people actually search, a technically sound website that Google can crawl properly, and consistent signals that connect your business to the area. As a Noosa-based web design and SEO agency, we build this in from the start – it’s not a bolt-on.

Will my website show up when people search using AI tools like ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews?

This is an emerging and important question. AI-powered search tools pull from structured data – if your website doesn’t have schema markup implemented correctly, these platforms often can’t understand or cite your business accurately. We implement an AI-ready schema on every site we build, as we did for Surfskate Noosa, to give them visibility in AI search results, not just traditional Google.

Can you build a website that's ready for ecommerce later, even if I'm not selling online yet?

Yes – and this is worth thinking about early, because retrofitting e-commerce onto a site that wasn’t built for it is messy and expensive. We build WordPress websites on flexible foundations using WooCommerce-ready architecture, so adding a store later is a natural next step rather than a rebuild. That’s exactly how we approached Surfskate Noosa’s site, with retail on the roadmap.

We're a professional services business in Brisbane or Sydney — do you work with companies outside Noosa?

Absolutely. While we’re based in Noosa, we work with businesses across Australia and New Zealand – particularly B2B professional services firms in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Our process is fully remote-friendly. What you get is a boutique Noosa studio with the strategic thinking and technical capability that larger city agencies charge a premium for.
